Stories of ghosts and ghouls have fascinated and scared people for hundreds of years, serious research to what ghosts are really started in the late 1800's since then many cases of hauntings have been investigated with some great evidence, some are inspiring, some quite eerie and some rare cases quiet disturbing, Science is unable prove what many people experience, mainly because many of the paranormal events that take place is beyond what we humans understand and beyond what science knows at present, many scientists just deny the exsistence of ghosts and/or an afterlife, but gradually more scientists are coming to the idea that science needs to learn more on the subject as the evidence for paranormal activity is growing everyday, Modern soiciety has little to believe in these days spiritually, and in this age of technology and more and more people are believing in ghosts/paranormal as a way to make sense of this world, and with technology comes better equipment to gather such evidence! The word paranormal doesn't just cover ghosts but anything that is not normally explained such as ufo's, earthlights, cases like the burmuda triangle and loch ness all fall under paranormal, but this site generally concentrates on the spiritual side of things, although the forums do discuss every type of paranormal phenomena. Some explainations for ghosts is the residual energy theory or psychic recording, where a person can leave traces of there energy as every human has an aura, an energy field which can change with mood, health etc,this energy can be imprinted, usually on stone , and usually during a traumatic or stressful event in the persons life, this is then projected as an apparition, we are not sure what can trigger these apparitions, pyschic recording types of ghost are "playbacks" the stone tape theory suggests that stone is made up of many things that are contained on magnetic video tape, and can store energy and sometimes play the event back, there is no way to communicate with these types of ghosts as they are not concious beings, just stored energy. they do not respond to human intervention. A famous case is one that took place in york, in 1953 a Mr Harry Martindale claimed to have witnessed a legion of roman soldiers marching through the celler of the house he was working on. Typical charactaristics of this type of ghost are they dont respond to any interaction, they can be seen as floating, from the knees up, and walking through walls etc.., this may be due to the fact the places they are seen have changed since the person was alive, floor and ground levels will change making a ghost appear to float or be walking below the level of the floor or ground, re-appear, Its not only apparitions of living things that can be imprinted, many stories of horse and carriages have been sighted, but carriages have no soul or spirit so it is intriuging that these apparitions can leave imprints. Spirit hauntings The cases of spirit hauntings are very different and make up a minority of known hauntings, sometimes known as restless sprits these are believed to be the spirits of the dead (not always though), they are stuck on this earth for a reason, maybe unfinished business, maybe the sprit is unable to face reality of its position, guilt is another reason why a spirit may not pass over, basically it is thought by some groups that if a person holds on to an emotion it can hold them to this physical earth. These ghosts can seem to be able to communicate with the living in various ways, the easiest being through a medium, a person with the abilitiy to see, hear and communicate with spirits, but we believe anyone with an open mind can communicate with spirit via methods such as dowsing, with practice, this can be a good tool during investigations, Some spirits are known to come back after death, they have passed over but returned to visit loved ones, maybe as a guide, or during happy times such as births, parties, marriages. Some spirits are known to stay on this plane as they loved it here and do not want to leave and some unfortunate souls sometimes do not realise there are dead, this can be the case in very sudden deaths. This particular type of haunting can be the most intriguing as communication with a spirit can reveal some amazing facts, that on many occasions can be proved through records and documents. Crisis apparitions: these were very common during the two World Wars , Crisis apparitions were being reported at 250-400 a month! these apparitions are ghosts or spirits that appear to loves ones usually within 12 hours of their death, either before or after, some appear to re-live thier death, and some are there to reassure loves ones. A famous case was that of the famous great war poet Wilfred Owen, he appeared before his brother moments before his death, his brother Harold later wrote of the event " He did not speak, only smiled his most gentle smile.." he later found out his brother wilfred died at that moment. Poltergeists - This is known to be German for 'noisy ghosts' but this is infact a poor translation, geist is ghost, this is being proved to be inaccurate as current theories dont always involve any actual ghosts, and polter comes from the noun polterer, meaning blusterer, bully or rowdy person. These are known as the most violent and disturbing forms of paranormal activity, they cannot be classed as ghosts as such as many cases no ghost or spirit is involved. Psychokinesis is thought to be one of the causes, as the victim is statistically (but not always) a young pubesent female, and someone who supresses stress and/or anger, these supressed emotions are made more intense due to being pubesent, are then thought to be released unconsiously causing things being thrown, Bangs and other phenomena usually associated with ghosts/spirits, Another theory put forward for some potlergeist cases is the location may be near a source of high electromagnetic fields, maybe from nearby powerlines and substations, it is thought such magnetic fields can affect the human brain, changing emotions, giving feelings of being watched and in rare cases the emf's can cause levetation of objects, but this has been done in laboratory conditions with very high emf's. One famous case is the enfield case. This case was one of the most publicised cases of poltergeist known, it occurred from August 1977 and continued until September 1978. A mother and her four children who lived in a council house in Enfield, London experienced very severe poltergeist activity, many experts were called in to solve the problem and failed time after time to come up with a solid explaination for what was happening, the family suffered every type of poltergeist activity and other ghostly phenomenon. Things were thrown, voices were heard, the girl who was thought to be the "focus" of all the activity was seen to levetate on numerous occasions, objects were seen to materialise and fly across the room, on one occasion hitting a camera man on the head. The girl, janet, who was the focus of most activity is heard on tapes to be almost possessed with a voice of an old man, experts say whilst its not impossible for an eleven year old girl to recreate a similar voice, it is impossible to talk like it for two hours ( as janet once did) and not be physically affected by it. At the very least she should have had a very sore throat or more likey injured her vocal chords. Janets voice after was said to be as sweet and clear as ever, the name bill was given for the voice, it seemed to communicate through janet and it would not allow people to be in he room whilst it was talking. On one occasion janet was able to throw an ex-police woman who was a social worker off her, she was trying to restrain Janet who was having a violent episode, this was a feat for anyone, let alone an eleven year old girl. The doctor was called and he administered 10 milligrams of valium to calm her down, this dose was too much for a child, she went out like a light, then 40 mins later a massive crash was heard. They thought the roof had come down. On investigating the noise they found Janet was not in bed, she had been thrown fourteen foot onto a wardrobe! Janet was still in deep sleep or unconcious, this happened three times that night! Poltergeists will continue to get peoples facsination for a long time. Time slips: These events are when people witness building or areas of land as it was in a different time in history, a known case in Essex was a brother and sister saw a georgian house in the area between Hadleigh and Leigh on sea, the siblings also saw a girl and a dog walk from the house, the house or its residents have never been heard of or seen again. Other cases include abby's and priorys that seem to appear as they did when they were working buildings, theories on this involve the stone tape theory where energy is stored into the materials of the building or land.
